In the brain storm we came up with loads of fantastic ideas but soon realised we had a lack of resources as we were wanted to do things the teacher had not previously done herself. The area we thought was going to be hardest to set up was the mini butterfly and caterpillar habitat we wanted.
However, due to the kindness and generosity of others we managed to create a fantastic mini garden for the children. We went to the local garden center in hope of being given one or two free plants that were about to be thrown out and some compost. The lovely woman who owned the garden center went out of her way to find us plants that butterflies and caterpillars love (such as lavender) and gave us a whole bag of compost. We walked away with about £50 worth of plants for free, and all because she was keen for us to get it right for the children.
Similarly we called our local butterfly house and asked if we could borrow some caterpillars for two days. Unfortunately, they were unable to give us any caterpillars as they are all tropical ones that wouldn't survive in the cold. They were, however, able to give us some dead butterflies for the children to handle and some opened cocoons for them to look at. All of which the school can keep.
The mini habitat is now planted and the butterflies and cocoons carefully placed around it. It looks fantastic (I'll hopefully grab a picture of it tomorrow).
If it weren't for the kindness of strangers, none of this would have happened. So thank you to those who donated things to us in the past few days and it just goes to show that there is no harm in asking.
